First of all I would like to wish everybody a wonderful 2023, health, happiness and peace are the key words. But also an inspring year of traveling and off course urban art.

Like last year, Street Art Cities has been following the scene all year long from up close, with every month around up of 100 fresh and beautiful murals from all over the world. It’s impossible to state that we’ve seen every new mural in all corners of the globe, but thanks to our community we cheated the instalgorithm and discover a lot of new art: from the usual suspects but again we found some fresh talents or established artists who are finding their way to social media. Discover all 100 nominees in 92 cities in 30 countries. Voting is easy download the free Street Art Cities app, click on the ‘best of 2022’ banner.

Last years winner: Diego As from Lugo

We realise it’s not done to compare art and artists, but this “best of” is not about comparing, it’s all about sharing and promoting urban art. Last years winner Diego As from Lugo and his “Caesar” mural have made the news all year long.

This imperial mural became a popular landmark and throughout the year people send us pictures or tagged us in their stories while visiting the city in Galicia. Diego featured in 50+ articles and a dozen TV shows and never painted so many murals in his career. He even got invited by the Lugo Council and got awarded by the local mayor Lara Méndes: “the majestic mural of Julio César, done in a gray scale, has become a symbol of the city, a new attraction and an obligatory stop for tourists, who are photographed daily in the area.” : shared a happy mayor.

We’ve heard similar stories of other artists who made the top 10 last year. We never thought this showcase of popular murals would have such a positive effect on artists and ther careers, so this year we have a surprise for the eventual winner (more on that later).

STATISTICS & NUMBERS

You might wonder how we came to this list, well like we said earlier every month we select 100 artworks, which we find ourselves or through tips and suggestions by hunters, other locals and artists. After sharing them on our Instagram stories we pull the numbers through our own algorithm, calculating a score which takes numerous factors in account like total views, votes & engagement. One trend we’ve noticed is the increase of “👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻” (no-votes), usually by fans of a certain artist who then vote down all the other artworks. But even these “no votes” have an affect in our home made algorithm 😁. So this year our “best of” series reached more the half a million viewers and we registered almost 150.00 votes giving it a nice 25% of overall engagement. Some pretty cool numbers don’t you think?

Enough bla bla bla, time to vote! Voting is a bit different this year, insteda of using a boring “google forms” we developed an award page where you can scroll through the nominees and even filter on country.

TO VOTE: just download our free Street Art Cities app (Google Play store, Apple store), click on the “best of 2022” banner and vote. We know how difficult it is to pick one favorite, every users has 10 votes to cast, just call it our New Years present 😉. Voting ends on january 31st and check in our Instagram page where we will share the standings and more.

Street Art Cities is the biggest urban art database thanks to a community of hunters, street art enthusiastics, artists, festivals, galleries, cities and more. You’ll find a staggering +40K artwork locations in over 1100 cities in 93 countries in the world. But it’s more then a database, with its digital tools it helps and promotes artists (take a look at the latest feature called “artist profiles”), but thanks to the ‘official partnership program’ SAC has been supporting several cities in their mission to create a map/app to show the open air gallery in their streets. Building not only a database but also expertise to give this influential contemporary art the credits it deserves. So if your city slooking for a digital map, if no one else can help, and if you can find them….maybe you can hire The SAC-team. (play the A-team intro on the background and this sounds a whole lot better).
